Capturing Stardom: A Guide to Headshots for Aspiring Actors

In the competitive realm of acting, a standout headshot can be your passport to casting success. Here is the guide I follow for any session:

  1. Camera Setup: Investing in a decent camera with good resolution is key. A high-quality smartphone can suffice for a self-tape but not for your headshots. I ensure we shoot at the optimal time of day to ensure we have sufficient lighting, to avoid shadows and maintain clarity in your shots.

  2. Backdrop Selection: I opt for a clean, neutral backdrop to keep the focus on you. Personally, I am not a fan of overly colourful backdrops!

  3. Attire and Makeup: I ask actors to choose outfits that complement their eye colour and which lean towards the roles they aspire to play. For example, maybe a beautiful neck-lined top for a women who is keen to work on a period drama. I say, keep it simple, avoid busy patterns and go for natural-looking makeup which enhances your features, without overshadowing your look.

  4. Natural Expression: I say it time and time again, your headshot should capture the real you. Relax your shoulders, maintain good posture, and convey a natural expression that is both warm and engaging.

  5. Framing and Composition: I frame your shots from the chest up, ensuring your face remains the focal point. I follow the rule of thirds for a balanced composition, it does wonders!

  6. Variety is Key: I do experiment with different angles and ask you for various expressions, and poses (without over doing it)! Its important to showcase your range by incorporating photos with subtle variations in mood and intensity, but nothing over the top.

  7. Editing with Caution: While basic editing is acceptable and often necessary, I avoid over-manipulating your images. Casting directors appreciate authenticity, so its crucial we let your natural features shine through.

Embrace your uniqueness and remember, your headshots are a powerful tool in your journey towards acting stardom.
